🚨Life Update!
.
After 4 incredible years, the time has come to move back to the USA. The news is definitely bittersweet. On one hand, we both have new incredible opportunities waiting for us stateside. But on the other, India really has become our home and we are sad to be leaving our close friends and the lives we have here. ❤️
.
This past week we celebrated one of our last weeks living on this hemisphere with a trip to the Maldives! We are definitely going to miss being so close to so many cool places 😄
.
Grant officially moves back on Tuesday while I’ll get to stick around in India through the end of Sept. Looking forward to making the most of our time left and planning future visits back 😉
.

So happy we made the trip to Abu Simbel and stayed there over night. The Sound and Light show is really nice! We got to enter at 5pm and have this temple all to ourselves until people started to arrive for the show 😄

Egypt has been on our bucket list for a while now! So glad we visited over the last 2 weeks. It was everything we hoped for and more 🙌

We started off our trip visiting Cairo and the Great Pyramids of Giza! 🤩
.
This really set the tone for the whole trip! It is truly incredible to think about how these massive structures were built over 4500 years ago in an age with fairly limited tools. It also says a lot that these marvels have been able to withstand the tests of time to be the last remaining ancient wonder of the world still standing. 🤯
.
🚨Tips for your visit!
😶‍🌫️ It was surprisingly windy and foggy in the mornings in Cairo in December making the visibility of the pyramids limited. The fog cleared up by 11am though which you can see in the last picture ☝️!
⏳ You can go inside the pyramids (we entered the Great/ Khufu’s Pyramid), but go early (by 8am) to beat the crowds. There are thin tunnels you have to crawl through and limited space for 2 directions of traffic. Many people turn back when it gets too crowded because it is a very difficult climb with so many people.
👀 For a great view of all 9 pyramids and a delicious brunch/ lunch, we recommend booking a reservation in advanced at @9pyramidslounge. The Egyptian breakfast there was delicious!🤤

A quick walk through of Qatar! 😄

Except by quick… we probably averaged about 25k steps a day for 4 days in Qatar so actually quite a bit of walking! 😅
.
We actually prefer cities where things are well connected through public transport and you can walk the rest of the way. Qatar was definitely that! We enjoyed visiting:

📍Souq Waqif - The life of the city, a central market with great restaurants and shops 🌶
📍Corniche Promenade - Great walk to catch the sea and the Doha skyline 🏙
📍The Pearl - Check out “Venice in Doha” and grab a bite at one of the many restaurants with a view of the marinas 🛥
📍Qatar National Museum - Super unique architecture and the exhibits were impressively designed inside🌌
📍Education City Mosque - Beautiful exterior and right next to the botanical garden which was nice! 🕌 🌳
📍Qatar National Library - Probably the most modern library we have seen to date! 📚
📍Box Park - Cool spot for food in a converted shipping container area with a nice view of the marina 🍱

🌳 We were blown away by the integration of nature into such a densely packed and modern city of skyscrapers
🌱 We loved how much we saw about the push for sustainability in the country!
🙌 There was so much to do! We wish we had some more time but had a great extended weekend here
🚊 The metro is so well connected and a super easy form of transportation around the city. We highly recommend it!
🌸 The botanical garden - especially the National Orchid Garden - is a must 👌
🍜 The food - everything from Hawkers to fine dining - was absolutely incredible. Loved the food scene! 🤤
🏝 The beaches on Sentosa island are a bit over-rated 😅 but honestly this is the only thing we did that we didn’t absolutely love!

The future of our oceans is in our hands! 😊🌱

While in Singapore we visited the @s.e.a.aquarium on Sentosa Island! With all the scuba diving we’ve been doing recently, we thought it would be a great way to get to learn more about the underwater life we see on our dives 😄
.
We got to see things we have never been able to see before - like jelly fish 🙌 and the animals were so much more active like these huge eels and lobster! 😅
.
Overall, it was a great aquarium and a great way to spend a morning in Singapore! We also really loved the emphasis on doing our part to help keep our oceans healthier that was weaved throughout ❤️🌱

Their multi-course menu is focused on highlighting a vegetable in each course and all of them were incredibly delicious ❤️ We also loved what they shared about their sustainable sourcing practices 🌱

When thinking of fine-dining, to be honest, we never considered trying a fully vegan menu. Maybe there was that little fear of what we’d be missing out on 😅 But we were blown away by the vegan menu curated! Made the experience even that much better 👌

We will not forget our experience at the ArtScience Museum! 🤩

We love art and science, but have never been to a museum before that has brought those two things together in such an interactive and unique way! While we were in town, there were 3 exhibits and after consideration, we decided to buy the ticket for all 3 🙈, but we highly would recommend them all!
.
Our favorite art installation was the last in the video called “Crystal Universe”. It captured the expansiveness of space and time in such a cool way as you walk through a passage that makes it feel like it continues forever in all directions 👌
.
Tips for your visit:
⏱ Earlier is always better, but it was nice that they gave certain time based tickets for the Future World exhibit so there aren’t too many people there at one time. However mid-day it was still quite busy 😅
⏳For all 3 exhibits, it took us about 3 hours. We could have spent longer, but felt this was a good amount of time!
💸 Each exhibit costs between 15-21 SGD. The combination of all 3 had a small savings and was 45 SGD.
👧This is a great spot for kids! So many cool digital art installations that kids could interact with which was fun to see!
🥐 There’s a great cafe within the museum where you can grab a quick bite in between the exhibits!

We LOVED the Singapore Botanical Gardens! A big part of it is because of their National Orchid Garden which is just exceptional 🤩❤️

Things to know about visiting!
⏱ The Botanical Gardens open at 5 am, the National Orchid Garden opens at 8:30am & closes at 7pm
💸 Getting into the overall gardens is free! It’s 15 SGD for non-residents to visit the Orchid Garden inside.
🦢There’s a few lakes and small waterfalls,
🌳And a cool rainforest section!
🤩There was even a great exhibition center highlighting the impacts of climate change and the actions Singapore is taking as a country to do its part ❤️
🏃‍♂️It was also impressive how many people were taking their morning runs/ walks here from around the city!

Like any big city, Singapore can be more costly to visit than other areas! However, we were surprised with how many great things there were to do for FREE in the city! 😄🙌
.
Here are our ✨Top 5✨ to check out when you visit:
👉 Singapore Botanical Gardens - While you do have to pay to get into the National Orchid Garden (which is definitely worth it), the rest of the gardens were free! There was a nice rainforest walk, a few lakes, and tons of great gardens throughout the grounds to check out!
.
👉 Marina Bay Promenade - there’s a nice loop you can take around the bay with great views of the skyline and the Merlion. We enjoyed sitting and people watching! Don’t miss out on the Spectra Light & Water Show which happens at 8 & 9 PM every night!
.
👉 Gardens by the Bay - while the Cloud Forest and Flower Domes are paid attractions, the rest of the gardens are free. You can visit the 3 different sections of Supertrees, other parts of the gardens, and enjoy the Garden Rhapsody light show (at 7:45pm and 8:45pm)!
.
👉 Sentosa Beaches - We were impressed that all the public transport around Sentosa was free! You could ride the tram between their 3 beaches and take the metro over to the resort area very easily. We visited the Tanjong Beach as they have a popular beach club there, but any of the beaches are open for enjoying. There were nice volleyball nets and games going on at Tanjong! We wouldn’t say these are the best beaches ever (mainly because you look out to see a lot of cargo ships in your view), but if you are looking for some sunbathing and relaxing on a nice sandy beach, this could be a great spot for you!

👉 Neighborhood Hopping - There are so many great pockets in Singapore to explore! We enjoyed walking around Chinatown and Haji Lane (known for all of its street art)! These spots are great for grabbing food, coffee, or a beer!
.
No limit of great things to do in the city and great to know that not all have to break our wallets 😄

🌿 We loved how integrated nature and greenery were to the city design
👌 The city was so clean and quiet in comparison to most big cities
🌏 There was so much around the city about the work Singapore is doing to get to net-zero by 2050 which was really exciting!

Snorkeling in the Komodo Islands! 💯

By far the best snorkeling we have done to date! Lots of turtles, 3 reef sharks, and the most vibrant corals and fish right up at the surface as well 🐠🪸❤️
.
We got so many chances to snorkel over the 3 days on our live aboard. The notable spots:

3️⃣ Manta Point

We wish we would have actually gone scuba diving here after seeing the quality of the snorkeling. If you get the chance, we’d highly recommend it based on what we saw! The water clarity and biodiversity is 👌🔥

You must try to catch the sunrise at Padar Island if you are visiting the Komodo Islands! 🌅
.
While you can definitely get there for sunrise from Labuan Bajo via speed boat in about 1.5 hours, this was one of the other benefits we had of visiting the Komodo Islands via a live-aboard. We got to stay there the night so at 5am we could easily get to the island to start the hike towards the top and be one of the first ones there ! 🙌
.
When we got to the starting point of the hike around 5:15am, there were so many stars above us! 🌌 It was so nice to see the transition from starry night to fiery red sunrise over the course of the hike. It only took a short 20 minutes to get to the top and then we got to sit and enjoy the view for about 2 hours!
.
This sunrise was one of the best we have seen in a while ❤️
.
While the sunrise was spectacular, we also really enjoyed the golden hour there too. The Komodo Islands are uniquely desert safari colored and lit up as gold during that time 🤩

One of our favorite spots we visited while in #bali was the Tirta Gangga Water Palace! ❤️

Fountains, koi fish, hidden gardens - there was so much to explore and enjoy 🙌 A funny debate about koi fish below 😅👇
.
🚨Tips:
- ⏱It opens at 8am, and that’s the time that we arrived. Surprisingly there were already a few people inside, but not too many! Consider getting here around the same time if you would like to enjoy the main water feature with the hexagon steps and all the big fish by yourself 😄
- 🗺 It is only a 20 minute drive from the Lempuyang Temple so if you are visiting this area to see the Gate of Heaven, this is definitely worth a stop after that!
- 🐠 There are several very large fish in a few of the fountains that you can walk through. This is probably because they eat a lot 🙈 You can buy fish food right outside the palace entrance. It comes in a plastic bag so we skipped it 🌱
- 👩‍🍳There were a few restaurants within the palace grounds that had a great view of the entire garden and the main fountains. While we didn’t stop, they looked like a great spot to grab breakfast or lunch if you are looking to spend more time here!
- 🌳 While most spend there time at the first few water features near the entrance of the palace, if you walk all the way back and to the right of the bridge, you’ll find a staircase. You can go up to find a secret garden with unique statues and a stage which was used for ceremonies in the past. Don’t miss it!

So Koi fish debate… Do you have a tattoo?

We have been debating getting tattoos and are on the fence. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️ Allison started by wanting one of a koi fish swimming “up” which symbolizes perseverance based on a story she had heard about them swimming up stream and jumping off a cliff to turn into a dragon 🐉. Now we are thinking maybe we get a yin and yang ☯️ symbol made by 2 koi fish (one on each of us) that you would see when we hold hands 👫!

We have mixed feelings about our visit to 📍Tukad Cepung Waterfall!
.
👎On one side, we got to really see what IG can do to a place😔 Over the past 4 years, this waterfall has become a lot more popular to the point that there are a few different restaurants and shops on the way down making it more commercialized. Previously it was just a nice nature hike to the falls with not much around! There was also quite the queue to be able to see the big waterfall once down there…
.
👍On the other side, because everyone is really focused on the big waterfall, we were able to have the smaller one on the other side all to ourselves for some time and loved how refreshing it felt to be in it 💦🙌
.
Overall we did enjoy our time here and while we didn’t take a photo with the large cave waterfall, just seeing it was probably one of the best waterfalls we have seen to date! But the following may help you better plan your trip 😄
.
🚨Tips:
- ⏱This one is tricky - if you arrive before 9am there is almost no queue! But the nice lighting coming through may not be there. The sun location you see coming through in the last clip is at 11:30am
- 📸 It’s no doubt this waterfall is extremely beautiful and worth capturing, but just know it may take some time as everyone wants to have the area to themselves to get a great shot. If you come past 10, plan to wait about 1 hour to get your shot!
- ✌️While everyone knows this area for the hidden cave waterfall, there’s actually another if you turn right at the bottom of the stairs instead of left! It’s worth checking out for a bit if you have the time!
- 👌 There are stairs on the way down with just a simple short walk. Plan for about 15 minutes each way
- 🥪 The restaurant at the top of the stairs was pretty good!

In all, plan for about 1-2 hours for this waterfall 😄

Ever since visiting the Maldives and trying diving for the first time, we’ve been hooked! 🪝

Luckily there are so many incredible spots near by to India for great snorkeling and scuba diving 🤿🙌
.
When visiting Nusa Penida, we got to do both and were blown away by the quality of the coral reef north of the island! Unfortunately, due to the rains and high currents, we weren’t able to make it to Manta Point. However, the visibility and quality of this dive in the north blew us away! 😄
.
🚨Tips:
- ⏱Book your dive early in Sept. It is still peak season and many of the dive shops were fully booked for the morning dives
- 🪸Manta Point is definitely a highlight but ensure you plan your trip during the dry season to avoid high currents and get to visit in a great visibility time
- 💯The Pura Ped site is great for both scuba diving and snorkeling. Marine life and corals were amazing here!

When we were originally researching our trip to Nusa Penida, almost everything we read recommended renting a scooter for getting around the island 🛵🏝

We own a scooter in Bangalore and love riding it around the city so we thought it would be a great idea! Nothing could beat the price, right!? 😄
.
Honestly, after two days of steep inclines and very bumpy terrain - especially as you get closer to destinations by the cliff sides like 📍Tembeling Beach - our butts, backs, and bodies hurt so much we would NOT recommend this option to anyone 😅 The challenge is that some of these spots really can’t be visited easily by car so you would have to spend more time hiking up and down which limits how much you would get to do. Ultimately scootering is probably still the best way, but be prepared for the challenges 🙈
.
The natural pools and beach at this location were definitely worth the trip! 🙌
.
🚨Recommendations:
- It’s on the sunset side of the island, so visiting in the morning allows you to have this place almost to yourself until around 10am. More people definitely start coming around then
- There are two natural pools and two sides of the beach front - a beachy side and a rocky one so explore both sides!
- The waves are pretty strong so we didn’t get into the water for long, the natural pool by the beach was definitely the best spot to relax in
- It takes about 15-20 minutes to hike each way from where you park your scooter (which is free!)
- 1-2 hours in total should be a good amount of time to explore and then head off to the next location!

Such great memories and adventures over the last year ❤️ Grant then added the cherry on top and surprised me with an anniversary dinner at @farmlore.in last night!

A drive towards the outskirts of Bangalore, Farmlore is located on a 37 acre farm. Truly farm-to-table, most of their ingredients come from their farm or hydroponic garden. The modern, glass-lined dinning room is lit with the energy from the solar paneled roof and seats no more than about 24 people each night 🙌🌱
.
We sat at the Chef’s Table - or “Da Pass” - where we were able to hear all about the intricately plated dishes from a few of the Michelin starred chefs directly! This week’s menu was inspired by the top 10 historic events in India as a tribute to the 75th Independence Day last Monday. This will be a one and only menu as they innovate and create a new 10-course tasting menu each week! 🤯

Instagram vs Reality 🙈 Our waste edition…

When we were in the Andaman Islands, we had a friend help show us this amazing beach that was not known to tourists (doesn’t show up on Google maps!). It was by far the most beautiful beach we have seen and we had it all to ourselves. 🙌
.
However, along the tree line there was heaps of trash. When we asked if this was used as a dumping ground, he let us know that this trash floats onto the beach because of the tidal currents that push it over from Malaysia and other South East Asian countries. We came to learn that this isn’t trash they are generating, but rather trash/ recycling that is being sent there from the US and other developed countries. It possibly falls on transit or is just too much for the capacity within the receiving countries to take it all. 😔
.
@misanthrope_wanderlust_ had a few trash bags as he had planned to do a beach clean up while we were hanging out at the beach. Kaushik dedicatedly does this each time he visits (🙏, but as soon as we saw, we jumped in to help out.
.
The most common things we saw:
- Waterbottles
- Toothbrushes
- Styrofoam
- Plastic fish netting
- Plastic jugs (kinds for milk, detergent, etc)
.
Until it’s in your face, sometimes it’s hard to realize the impact of our decisions. This was definitely an eye opening experience for us! If this is what we are seeing on the beach, imagine what’s in the water impacting marine wildlife and those ecosystem 🐠🐢🦈
.
Be a part of the change you want to see! ♻️
🌱Refuse - Plastic water bottles/ single use plastic - Carry your reusable water bottle!
🌱Reduce - Strive for a few less purchases each year (avoid packaging & styrofoam)
🌱Reuse - Make the most of what you have! Mend/ repair to extend the life
🌱Recycle - While this is a better option than things going straight to a landfill. Consider where some of it ends up☝️and look to start from the top of this cycle!

Our hiking trip to Hampta Pass exposed us to our first trip of this kind! ⛰🏕 We went through an organized tour group (IndiaHikes) which came very recommended to us.
.
After doing some reflection, we wanted to share some pros and cons in case you might be considering a similar trek in the future 😄
.
✅ PROS!
- It made hiking for the first time extremely accessible. We just had to show up on time and the rest was taken care for us which was nice!
- They set up treks on incredible routes so you know you are going to see something epic 👌
- They prepared 4 meals (breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner) and we aren’t talking about packet food or anything like this. These were gourmet meals with desserts and all 🤤
- They went above and beyond to ensure everyone was safe and took extra precautions on this which is extremely important 🙏
- IndiaHikes especially strives to leave the mountain more beautiful than they found it and we loved participating in this sustainability mission they have 🌱❤️
.
🤔CONS
- They host these treks for fairly large groups. Our original group size was supposed to be about 24 people but ended up being 18 with a few that didn’t show.
- Big groups can mean things go slower on the trail so if you are looking to cover more ground and relax at the campsite more, that might not be possible.
- The schedule did feel a little packed. We were hoping to be able to relax and read a bit more, but we had activities planned from morning until bed time which did feel a little tiring by the end.
.
Overall we are so thankful to have done our first trek with IndiaHikes! However, we may try to book with a smaller group or more private option for our next trip (Dreaming about alpine lakes in Kashmir next year 😂).
.
No matter what! You can’t go wrong! Anything that gets you out into nature is worth it 🙌

We are all about getting off the beaten path when we can, so when a friend recommended the Hampta Pass trek as being another great monsoon trek with lots of beautiful meadows and mountains - we were in!

And we were absolutely not disappointed! 🌸🌼🌺

There was such diversity in this trek as well as it’s a crossover between two valleys. Highly recommend it if you are looking to plan your next trek!

When we got married last year, we spent quite a bit of time thinking about our “unity ceremony”. We wanted to find something unique, but that really embodied us and what we value. We almost were going to pick making guacamole together 🥑🍅🧅Glad we didn’t… 😂

Planting a tree together was by far the best thing we could have picked and so happy Grant’s parents let us plant it in their backyard! 😄 Doing right by the earth has been on our minds a lot more lately and this was just a small act that represents the importance it has in our lives.
.
It’s Allison Birthday today - so some might say - she was born to follow this path, but it’s been nice that this has now become a combined journey ❤️ From aiming for a zero-waste lifestyle, beginning to compost all our food waste, taking more active roles in the ESG space at work, and offsetting our carbon footprint from this past year, it’s been great to learn and have our passion in this space grow even more!

We loved the desert portion of our trip to Jaisalmer! 🐪

There’s something about being in a completely different environment that makes you appreciate things more! We are not huge fans of the heat actually 😅 and we were super surprised with how windy Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert area actually is.

The latter is actually great news as we were able to see wind turbine farms all around us 😄 The former made us happy to live in Bangalore which has, arguably, the best weather in India. Yes, we are ready for your arguments now 😂

Stars have such a special place in our hearts. Grant actually proposed in Wadi Rum, Jordan under the stars! ✨There’s something about looking up and realizing we are so small in the grand scheme of things. All we have is each day to make the most of! It’s nice to get to sit back and reflect on this every once and a while 😊

For us this time, it was with our teeth chattering as we snuggled under the thinnest of blankets 😂 We did not pack warm enough clothes, but it was still an incredible early morning of stars!
